What is Red Dirt Music?
Red dirt music sprung up from the rock red soil of Oklahoma and quickly spread to hills of central Texas. Defying genre classifications, red dirt music–like the hearty souls of the land in which it thrives–makes good use of all that’s at hand. It’s honest, raw, tender, compassionate, and tough. In the red dirt spirit, Stumble East mixes music that we brought with us to this land–Memphis blues and country and Midwest rock and pop–with all the sounds and experiences we discovered when we arrived. We honestly write, play, and sing what we passionately feel. We play from our hearts in the heart of red dirt country.
We’re a Travelin’ Band
We’re red dirt and that means we play and perform on both sides of the Red River. This summer we’ll even be returning to Kenosha, Wisconsin to play multiple venues over the 4th of July weekend. So don’t be surprised when we come to a back yard or dive near you. If it’s taking too long and you can’t wait, just send up a flare and we’ll be there!
Influences & Inspirations
Over the years the band has played many different types of music. Kevin Hall has always been influenced by singer/song writers–B.W. Stevenson, John Prine, Jim Croce, Jackson Browne, Carol King, Patty Griffin, Chris Stapleton, to name just a few. (One could name the now Nobel Laureate Bob Dylan, but who wouldn’t?!) Every July you’ll find him in the heart and heat of Oklahoma, soaking in the sounds at Oklahoma’s Woody Fest. Held in Okemah, Woody Guthrie’s hometown, the festival is a mid-summer mecca for some of the world’s best and most fiercely independent red dirt/folk artists. Kevin continues to draw inspiration from those independent song writers calling their own shots and taking their own creative chances. Kevin’s original music reflects this influence with many compelling songs written from the soul, and often on the road.
Jay Tracy’s influences started in the psychedelic 60’s and his curiosity with Jim Morrison and the Doors. He is also influenced by today’s hard rock scene, not the metal rock where the singer sounds like Satan stabbed him in the throat, but the more melodic hard rock like Pop Evil, FFDP, Red Sun Rising, and scores of others. If Kevin’s favorite musical pilgrimage takes him to Okemah each summer, Jay has for years made the trek to Pryor for Rocklahoma. A StumbleEast set list without some well placed rock just wouldn’t be StumbleEast.
How is such a hodgepodge of mixes, genres, and influences Red Dirt? Simple. As Red Dirt icon Woody Guthrie himself said, folk music is simply music folks like!
